How to use vermicompost in pots
A practical starting point for using vermicompost in container gardens, with guidance on labels, drainage and storing the remaining compost.

Read the pack first
Follow the product’s directions and consider the needs of the plant you are growing. There is no single dose that suits every plant, pot size and growing mix. If directions are missing, ask the supplier before applying.
Two ways to think about it
Vermicompost can be incorporated as an ingredient when preparing a suitable growing mix, or used as a surface amendment for established plants where the product instructions recommend it. Avoid piling material against a plant’s stem.
Keep the whole pot in mind
Adding compost does not replace drainage or fix every watering problem. Check that drainage holes are clear, and watch how quickly your growing mix dries. Adjust watering to the plant and conditions rather than following a rigid calendar.
Store the rest thoughtfully
Follow the storage instructions on your pack. Keep gardening materials away from food preparation areas, wash your hands after handling compost and keep loose material out of reach of children and pets.
