Choosing a pot: size, material and drainage

Choose a plant pot by checking drainage, size and material, then pair it with the right spot in your home.

Begin at the bottom

Look for drainage holes when choosing a pot for direct planting. If you prefer a decorative outer pot without holes, keep the plant in a draining inner pot and empty water that collects after watering.

Give roots the right amount of room

Choose a container for the plant’s root system and growth needs. Moving a small plant into a much larger pot can leave a lot of wet growing medium around the roots. Repot when the plant needs it, rather than just because a larger pot is available.

Let the material suit your routine

Unglazed terracotta is porous and can dry out more quickly than less porous containers. The light, airflow and temperature in your space matter too. Choose a material that fits how often you can check on your plants.

Make it work where you live

Think about the weight of a filled pot, the surface it stands on and how you will move it for watering. A suitable saucer can protect furniture, but avoid leaving the plant standing in collected water.
