Start a balcony garden with three pots
Choose plants for the sunlight you have, then keep the first setup easy to look after.

Watch the sun before shopping
The railing may receive direct sun while the wall behind it stays shaded. Check the balcony at different times and choose plants for those conditions. For a sunny space, an herb, a flowering plant and a longer-term plant make a manageable starting group.
Make watering easy
Use pots with drainage and put them where you can reach them comfortably. Keep heavy containers on a secure, level surface. Think about where excess water goes, especially if a neighbour’s balcony or a walkway is below yours.
Learn the space before filling it
Notice which pots dry first, where wind catches the leaves and which plants need to move. A small garden is easier to adjust. Once the first plants settle in, add another pot or sow a small batch of seeds rather than filling every corner at once.
